Here’s the background:
Last year, I used the older version of this guide with:

• Expo 51
• React Native tvOS 0.74
  I was able to publish my app on tvOS, Google TV, and Fire TV

I wanted to update my app on tvOS, but Apple rejected the update.

I have to switch to Expo 54 (to build with Xcode 26).

So I cloned the latest version of this project to recreate my app from that version.

I didn’t change anything in package.json

Hi @stephanevallejo, thanks for reporting this!

The root cause is that @bam.tech/react-native-keyevent-expo-config-plugin hasn't been updated since May 2024 (v1.0.52) and expects an Objective-C AppDelegate (@implementation AppDelegate). However, Expo 54 with react-native-tvos 0.81 now generates a Swift-based AppDelegate, which breaks the plugin's regex matching.

The good news is that the iOS side of this plugin was never actually needed for this project as the tvOS RemoteControlManager uses React Native's built-in TVEventHandler for key events, not react-native-keyevent (which is only used on Android).

The fix replaces the third-party plugin with a local Android-only config plugin and addresses a few other build issues that surface with the current dependency versions (tvOS deployment target, Kotlin version, compileSdk).

For your information, I'm using Xcode 26.4.1 (not Xcode 16) so that Apple will approve my submission.

I think the JS correction only takes effect after the error occurs.
As of April 28, Xcode 26 is required for app submissions: https://developer.apple.com/news/upcoming-requirements/
