What happened, and what did you expect?

In KDE Wayland I open PolterType's settings and see two windows instead of one. The first one is some "winit window" and I cannot activate it by pressing. Both windows dissapear when I close Settings dialog.

Reproduced on KDE Plasma Wayland, and the window is not ours.

iced, the toolkit the Settings window is built on, creates a throwaway window with default attributes — hence the title "winit window" and no app id — purely to hand its renderer a window handle while it boots, asks winit to keep it invisible, and never destroys it (iced_winit-0.13.0/src/program.rs:300). Wayland has no "invisible": the toplevel is created regardless, and a compositor that lists toplevels rather than mapped surfaces shows it. A protocol trace of the Settings process under kwin_wayland has two toplevels, one of them titled winit window, and no destroy for it. Hyprland does not list it, which is why it went unnoticed here for eleven releases.

It is cosmetic — the window has no content, cannot be focused, and goes when Settings closes. iced 0.14 has no boot window at all, so the fix is that upgrade; it rewrites every pane of the Settings UI, which is not something to put in the same release as a critical updater fix. Recorded in docs/KNOWN-GAPS.md with the trace, and it is the reason the upgrade is now on the list.
