Self-hosted site monitoring and management
Akeeba Panopticon is a standalone PHP application. You install on a domain or subdomain separate from your sites. You can then use it to monitor and manage your sites remotely.
Currently, it supports Joomla and WordPress sites. Each CMS requires a connector extension to be installed on the monitored site:
- Panopticon Connector for Joomla 3 — Joomla 3.9 and 3.10 only
- Panopticon Connector for Joomla — Joomla 4.x, 5.x, and 6.x
- Panopticon Connector for WordPress — WordPress 5.x and 6.x
The recommended installation method for most users is the public release ZIP file or the official container image (Docker, Podman, etc).
We take the security of Akeeba Panopticon seriously. Only the latest released version and the development branch receive security updates, so we strongly recommend always running the latest release. Releases that address security issues are noted in the CHANGELOG with a ! prefix.
If you believe you have found a security vulnerability, please do not open a public GitHub issue, as that puts all users at risk. Instead, report it privately by following our security policy.
All of the security issues addressed in this release only affect multi-user installations in which some users have privileges lower than Super User. Exploiting any of them required an already authenticated, lower-privileged user; none of these issues could allow an unauthenticated user to gain access to a Panopticon installation, or grant access that the attacker's account did not already have at a higher privilege level.
Consequently, single-user installations, and installations where every account is a Super User, are not affected — there is no lower-privileged account for these issues to be exploited from.
If you want to contribute to Panopticon or would rather install it by cloning the Git repository, we have detailed instructions in the documentation. If you're in a hurry, there's a short version below:
Make sure you have git, composer, and npm (Node.js 16 or later) in your path.
Clone the repository.
Go into the folder where you cloned the repository and run composer install. This is important! This step installs PHP dependencies, runs npm install, compiles SCSS files into CSS, minifies JavaScript files, puts all external static resources in the folder Panopticon expects them to be, and generates a few necessary files (such as version.php).
You can now either use the web installer or the CLI installation method.
Translations are community–led and licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License version 3, or (at your option) any later version.
Community–led translations mean that we have no responsibility for the contents of the offered translations, including the terminology used, spelling and grammar errors, and accuracy. The only officially supported language of Akeeba Panopticon is English (Great Britain).

Our stance on AI is that it's a useful tool, but it needs oversight by an experienced developer – much like what you'd expect of a very enthusiastic junior developer.
We use generative AI to process and improve our documentation, assist us with release-adjacent tasks such as authoring release notes, and as a coding (NOT software archtiecture!) agent. The output of generative AI is always reviewed by an experienced human developer who signs off the commit and is responsible for it.
We do not discourage the use of AI when you submit issues and Pull Requests. However, we will hold you to the same standard we hold ourselves. Please do review your AI-assisted submission to avoid "AI slop". Thank you for your understanding!
Panopticon is free and open-source software. It is not monetized in any way: there is no charge for the software, no paid tier or edition, and no paid support. Its core functionality — monitoring the uptime and update status of Joomla and WordPress sites, installing updates on a schedule, and producing reports — is fully self-contained and does not depend on any commercial product or service. It includes two optional, incidental integrations with Akeeba Ltd.'s commercial software (Akeeba Backup Professional and Admin Tools Professional) for users who have those products; neither is required for Panopticon's core purpose, and neither is a condition of using the software. On this basis, Panopticon's supply does not constitute "placing on the market" within the meaning of Regulation (EU) 2024/2847 (the Cyber Resilience Act), and Panopticon does not qualify as intended for commercial activities in the sense used by that Regulation for classifying open-source software stewardship. This statement reflects our assessment as of 27 August 2026 and will be revisited if the distribution model or the role of these integrations changes.
