Summary

Minimal, self-contained OpenVM / zkvm-prover upgrade, split out from the larger shadow-test-ai branch (which also carries shadow-testing tooling, docs, and test-only code changes — those are intentionally not in this PR).

  • Dependency bump: scroll-zkvm-prover/verifier/types ed3b964bf887150 (OpenVM v1.6 → v2.0.0, guest v0.9.0); rust-toolchain nightly-2025-08-18 → nightly-2025-11-20.
  • prover-bin: OpenVM v2 deferred STARK verification for batch/bundle aggregation:
    • new deferral module derives input_commits / DeferralInputs / DeferralStates from child proofs;
    • handlers enable_deferral against child circuits (bundle additionally initializes batch-over-chunk deferral, else def_hook_commit is undefined);
    • child GPU SDKs are released after deferral setup to avoid VRAM starvation of the halo2-gpu SNARK phase.
  • prover-bin: download the pre-built agg_vk.bin circuit asset (avoids deriving the agg VK on GPU, which is never reclaimed) and new child_circuit_vks config; new halo2-gpu cargo feature + make prover_halo2gpu target for GPU SNARK (bundle) proving (24 GB-class GPUs).
  • libzkp: read the batch circuit's agg_vk.bin for root-proof verification; proving tasks carry input_commits; drop the pre-v0.9.0 universal task compatibility shim.
  • common / coordinator: adopt the v0.9.0 StarkProof wire format (proof / user_pvs_proof / baseline / deferral_merkle_proofs) in message types, proof receiver, mock verifier and tests.
  • configs: prover / e2e circuit base_urlscroll-zkvm/releases/v0.9.0/.

Test plan

  • cargo check -p libzkp -p prover passes locally
  • cargo fmt --all -- --check clean
  • go build ./... (coordinator, common) passes locally
  • CI (Coordinator / Common / Integration)
  • End-to-end proving of this exact stack was validated on the source branch via the shadow follow-mode harness against live mainnet bundles (chunk → batch → bundle, incl. halo2-gpu bundle proving).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added deferred verification for batch and bundle proof generation.
    • Added optional GPU-accelerated builds for SNARK bundle aggregation.
    • Enhanced proof validation with user public-value and verification metadata.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Added required verification-key checks for batch proof validation.
    • Improved proof processing compatibility and validation consistency.
  • Chores

    • Updated zkVM release configuration to v0.9.0.
    • Updated the Rust toolchain and proof-system components.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The PR migrates chunk and batch proofs to OpenVMStarkProof, adds OpenVM v2 deferral-aware proving and verification, updates task serialization and input commitments, and aligns dependencies, toolchains, GPU builds, and Galileo v2.0 release configuration.

Changes

OpenVM proof and deferral integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
STARK proof contract migration
Cargo.toml, common/types/message/message.go, coordinator/internal/logic/..., coordinator/test/*
Proof messages, metrics, mock verification, and test fixtures now use OpenVMStarkProof, UserPvsProof, and STARK proof statistics.
Rust task and verifier updates
crates/libzkp/Cargo.toml, crates/libzkp/src/lib.rs, crates/libzkp/src/tasks/*, crates/libzkp/src/verifier/universal.rs, crates/prover-bin/src/dumper.rs, crates/prover-bin/src/types.rs
Universal tasks preserve their input JSON, generated tasks initialize empty input_commits, batch verification uses agg_vk.bin, aggregated proofs use the singular proof field, and proof status enums derive defaults.
Deferral decoding and handler APIs
crates/prover-bin/src/deferral.rs, crates/prover-bin/src/main.rs, crates/prover-bin/src/zk_circuits_handler/*, crates/prover-bin/Cargo.toml
The prover decodes child STARK proofs, computes deferral inputs and state, configures handlers, retrieves commitments, resets handlers, and generates deferral-aware proofs.
Deferral-aware proving orchestration
crates/prover-bin/src/prover.rs
LocalProver loads cached handlers and aggregation assets, configures child and grandchild handlers, computes deferral data, and selects the appropriate proving method.
Build and release configuration
rust-toolchain, .github/workflows/*, zkvm-prover/Makefile, zkvm-prover/config.json.template, tests/prover-e2e/*
The Rust toolchain, CI toolchain references, GPU build target, and Galileo v2.0 release URLs now use the updated versions and paths.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to c5109

This upgrade changes proof aggregation, artifact retrieval, GPU build behavior, handler caching, and proof parsing; at the current head, child proofs may not be bound to the configured circuit, required artifacts may fail to download, proving may hang or be skipped unintentionally, and malformed proof input may crash the coordinator. The PR is not ready to merge until these issues are fixed or explicitly accepted by the owners.

Validate both proof pointers before use.

If the proof JSON omits or nulls proof, StarkProof is nil. If the JSON is top-level null, the outer proof pointer is nil. The metric blocks dereference these pointers before handling verification results, which causes a nil-pointer panic. Validate the outer proof and StarkProof before verification and metric collection.

Return an error instead of panicking on an unexpected commit length.

Line 70 uses expect. The length of r.input comes from the SDK, not from local code. If the SDK returns a digest that is not 32 bytes, the prover process panics. Every other failure in this function returns Err. Keep the failure mode consistent.

Restore legacy normalization for provers below 4.5.43. The coordinator accepts versions such as v4.4.45 and applies this function to universal batch and bundle tasks. Returning the new ProvingTask unchanged bypasses the required legacy conversion and can make those provers reject the task.

Publish agg_vk.bin for every configured asset URL. All nine preset URLs return HTTP 403 for this file, while the other assets are available. A clean cache therefore fails in get_asset for every proof type. Publish the file or make its download conditional for releases that do not provide it.

Guard against a parent and child that resolve to the same handler.

get_or_load_handler caches handlers by vk alone (Line 462, Line 481). If the configured child_circuit_vks entry equals the parent task vk, both calls return the same Arc<Mutex<UniversalHandler>>. Line 396 then waits on the mutex that Line 395 already holds, and the prover hangs with no error and no timeout. The bundle branch has the same shape at Line 386 and Line 387 if the batch vk equals the chunk vk.

A misconfigured child_circuit_vks value is enough to trigger this. Reject the aliasing case explicitly.

Use version-only release variables in both environments.

zkvm-prover/download-release.sh appends SCROLL_ZKVM_VERSION after /releases/. The current values create /releases/releases/v0.9.0/, so artifact downloads fail.

Bind each child proof to the configured child baseline.

proof.baseline is separate from the STARK proof and becomes the expected VerificationBaseline for get_raw_deferral_results. The equality check does not bind it to the configured child executable or verification key. If an untrusted prover supplies aggregated_proofs, a valid proof for another application can carry matching commitments and pass this path. Pass the expected child baseline from trusted configuration, or authenticate the baseline to the child proof.
